In this episode of In the Making, we speak with Rob Stimpson, a Canadian photographer whose work explores some of the most remote and powerful landscapes on earth.

Rob’s journey into photography didn’t begin with a grand plan. As a young artist he experimented with painting and drawing before eventually discovering photography in his twenties. What started as a hobby photographing the western coastline soon evolved into a lifelong pursuit.

A turning point came around the year 2000, when Rob was unexpectedly laid off from a corporate job. Instead of returning to another desk, he gave himself one year to try building a career as a photographer. That year turned into decades of work photographing wild landscapes, guiding expeditions, and teaching others how to see the natural world through a camera.

Over time his work has taken him across Canada and beyond, from the forests of Ontario to the polar environments of the Arctic and Antarctica. Along the way he has collaborated with organizations including Parks Canada and Ontario Parks, while also mentoring emerging photographers through teaching and workshops.

In conversation with Dawson, Rob reflects on the discipline required to sustain a creative life outdoors. He speaks about learning to adapt as the photography industry evolves, understanding where creative work actually finds an audience, and continually reinventing oneself in order to stay relevant.

At its core, his story is about something simple but powerful: building a life around the things that matter most.

For Rob, that means nature, curiosity, and the patience to keep chasing the light.

About Rob Stimpson

Rob Stimpson is a Canadian photographer whose work explores wilderness landscapes across the Arctic, Antarctica, and remote regions of Canada.

Originally from the small town of Hudson, Quebec, Rob began his career with a background in tourism before pursuing photography professionally. Early on he worked as a photographer’s assistant in Basel, Switzerland, an experience that helped shape the foundation of his practice.

Over the past two decades, his camera has taken him deep into some of the world’s most remote environments. As an expedition photographer, he has documented landscapes across the Arctic, Northern Quebec, the Northwest Territories, Greenland, and Antarctica. His work has also been commissioned by organizations including Parks Canada, Ontario Parks, and Ontario Tourism.

Rob’s photographs have been widely published and exhibited, and he was elected to the Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s College of Fellows in recognition of his contribution to documenting Canada’s natural landscapes.

In addition to his field work, he teaches photography at Loyalist College, leads workshops, and mentors emerging photographers interested in outdoor and expedition photography.

Through both his images and teaching, Rob continues to explore a simple but enduring question: how patience, curiosity, and time spent in wild places shape the way we see the natural world.
